Shakespeare

Shakespeare was born at Stratford-on-Avon in 1564. He went up to London to seek his fortune, leaving his wife and children. He began as an actor and his reputation as a dramatist grew rapidly.
He was in favour at Court and founded his own theatre "The Globe".
He showed an astonishing skill in dramatic construction and a perfect mastery of the language, characters surprisingly alive, with passion and feelings, doubts and all the good and evil of the human nature.
He died in 1616.

Shakespeare's creative work is generally divided into four periods:
1. The period of experiments (1590-1594) in which he wrote historical plays
(Richard III) and bright comedies (The Comedy of Errors).
2. The period of the great comedies (1595-1600) such as Midnightsummer night's dream, The Merchant of Venice, Much Ado about Nothing. This is also the period of the famous love tragedy Romeo and Juliet and The Merry Wives of Windsor.
3. The period of great tragedies (1601-1608): Hamlet, Othello, King Lear, Macbeth, Julius Caesar, Antony and Cleopatra.
4 . The period of the romantic dramas (1609-1613): A Winter's Tale and The Tempest.
