Dickens

Charles Dickens (1812-1870) was one of the most popular English writers of all the times. Many of his novels first appeared in English periodicals and read by the public with real enthusiasm.
He spent his youth in London, in contact with the working and lower-middle classes. The discovery of London was one of his contribution to English literature, and the slums of the great city are described in his novels with realism, humour and sincere pity. His style reproduced also the popular speech, which he was so familiar with.
